Systems approach

The systems theory is the most wide-spread approach for treatment of couples and families, but it is also useful in individual therapy. The therapist sees the person or couple as a sytem which consults in a time of crisis; this crisis, although experienced painfully, is an excellent opportunity for change. The consultation facilitates the process of evolution and restructuration within the system.

Modalities

A couple therapy which utilizes the systems approach involves both partners if possible, so that information can circulate and the verbal and non-verbal communication can evolve. As Watzlawick says, one cannot NOT communicate, whatever one does or not!

The tools inherent to the systems approach are particularly useful for persons, couples or families going through a time of transition or a new situation which makes the system more vulnerable, as it challenges its flexibility. This is the case throughout the stages of the person's or couple's life cycle.
